Flag of RHODESIA 1968 to 1979

The historical flag of Rhodesia was used from 1968 to 1979 to represent the former British colony of Rhodesia, which did not gain recognition from other nations as its own country, throughout its short lifespan from 1965 to 1979. Between 1965 and 1968, the flags were similar to the British ensign. Rhodesia was governed by a white minority, with this government being in constant war with nationalist guerilla forces, who represented the majority black population of Rhodesia. Ultimately in 1980, the guerrilla forces were successful in overruling the white minority government and creating the nation we know today as Zimbabwe. The flag of Rhodesia featured three vertical bands, with the two outer bands being dark green in colour and the central band being white. The green represented their fertile natural and agricultural land. While it is said that the white band portrayed stability and peace, neither of which Rhodesia ever achieved. In the centre of the flag is what was the Rhodesian coat of arms, which was composed of many components, inspired by both the local land and British heritage. The shield features a pickaxe, symbolising the important industry of gold mining during its time of existence. Above, this is a red lion, which is said to symbolise Rhodesia’s founder Cecil John Rhodes. The bird at the top portrays the bird at the Great Zimbabwe Ruins and on either side of the shield are sable antelope. Finally, the motto which states ‘Sit Nomine Digna’ translates to ‘may she be worthy of the name’. The flag of Rhodesia is seen today as a symbol of white supremacy, likely due to Rhodesia’s short history.

Rhodesia was located where Zimbabwe exists today, in southern Africa. It made up an area of around 390,580km² and its capital city was Salisbury. In the 1970s, Rhodesia was home to around 6.9 million people, of which only 5 to 10 percent were white. As the government was run by the white minority, the official language was English, despite the majority of the population speaking Shona and Sindebele.
