Rhodesia existed politically connected with ever changing forces from other countries for hundreds of years and as a result of those circumstances had to adopt ever changing flags. Despite gaining independence from Great Britain, who kept referring to Rhodesia as Southern Rhodesia, then in 1970 it was officially named Republic of Rhodesia but was never recognised as an official state in its own rights. Finally in 1980 after wars and more political interferences it gained recognition and independence as the Republic of Zimbabwe.
