Ethiopia National Flag
Ethiopia’s
national flag is composed of three horizontal bands. These bands are in the
colours green, yellow and red, from top to bottom. The centre of the flag
features a yellow star and sun rays surrounded by a blue circle. The green
stripe symbolises the fertility of the land and the yellow represents hope. The
red band along the bottom of the flag is symbolistic of strength and sacrifice
for the nation of Ethiopia. The central blue disc is representative of peace
and the yellow star and rays inside are symbolistic of the diversity within
Ethiopia and the unity held between its people.
The country
of Ethiopia is around 1.112 million km2 in area and is located on
the Horn of Africa. It is a landlocked nation and surrounded by the countries
of Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan and Eritrea. The country
features several mountain ranges as well as the famous Rift Valley running through
the center. The capital city of Addis Ababa, ‘New Flower’ in Amharic, is
located at 2,335m above sea level, which makes it the highest capital in Africa
and fourth highest in the world. Ethiopia also hosts the lowest point in
Africa, the Danakil Depression is 125 m below sea level and on average reaches
temperatures of 34 degrees Celsius. This makes the Danakil Depression the
hottest place on Earth. Ethiopia is home to around 134.2 million people which
speak over 80 languages. The most spoken language in Ethiopia is Oromo, which
is spoken by about one third of the population. However, the official language
of Ethiopia is Amharic and is spoken by around 29% of the population. Finally,
Ethiopia is one of only two African nations to never be colonised, along with
Liberia.
