Tuvalu National Flag

The light blue background symbolizes the Pacific Ocean that surrounds the country. The nine yellow stars held by the light blue background represent the country's atolls and islands.

However, Tuvalu used to go by the name of the Ellice Islands until 1975. Three years before they gained independence from the United Kingdom. The name Tuvalu means ‘eight standing together’ in Tuvaluan which is the primary language of Tuvalu. Although, some residents do speak English. In Tuvalu there is no point which is higher than 4.5m above sea level.
