The Papua New Guinea Flag depicts the Southern Cross, a silhouette of a Raggiana bird-of-paradise. The design was chosen through a nationwide design competition in early 1971. Susan Karike, who was 15 at the time was the winner. Black, red and yellow are the traditional colours for Papua New Guinea.
