FRIESLAND province of The Netherlands

Up to 1996, the province of Frysian was officially called Friesland. the three white stripes stand for Oostergo, Westergo and Sevenwolden/Zevenwouden, the blue stripes for the Frisian rivers. A flag with seven waterlily leaves representing the seven Frisian "zeelanden" which has been known since about the 11th century.
