CHINA NATIONAL FLAG

The Flag of the People's Republic of China was created when Citizen Zeng Liansong won the national flag competition with his design. It features four small stars around one large star on a red background and after some changes was flown in 1949 by Mao Zedung on a pole overlooking Beijing's Tiananmen Square at a ceremony announcing the founding of the People's Republic.

The only sub national flags allowed are those of the Hong Kong and Macau. Largely independently governed, Hong Kong since 1997 and Macau since 1999 are still under the control of China.
