When the Union Flag was introduced in 1606 it was simply the flag of Britain. It was flown at the main masthead of all ships, warships and merchant ships for England and Scotland. For many years it was called "Jack flag", or" the Kings Jack". By 1674 it was officially called the Union Jack.
