It is said that in 1941 during World War II the design first found national acceptance when RAAF pilots based in Singapore had a stencilled boxing kangaroo painted on the side of their Wirraway fighter planes to identify themselves to the Japanese as Australian and not British.
The Australian Olympic Commission (AOC) purchased the rights to the Boxing Kangaroo for the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, for 13 million dollars, and it was popular with pin traders.
The image of the boxing kangaroo has been known since at least 1891, in which a cartoon titled "Jack, the fighting Kangaroo with Professor Lendermann" appeared in a Sydney newspaper. The image was inspired by late 19th century outback travelling shows which featured kangaroos wearing boxing gloves fighting against men.
The boxing kangaroo is seen as a national personification of Australia. The symbol is often displayed by Australian spectators at sporting events.
