The national
flag of Botswana is composed of a central black stripe, with two thin white
stripes on either side. There are also two large blue bands on either side
which make up the majority of the flag. The black and white stripes represent
the equality, harmony and cooperation between the diverse range of races within
Botswana. The large light blue sections symbolise a rare yet vital resource in
Botswana, water. It is also said that this colour represents the sky. This flag
was adopted as the national flag of Botswana on the 30th of December
1966. On this date, Bechuanaland gained independence from the British Empire
becoming the nation of Botswana.
