The national
flag of Djibouti features a white triangle on the left side of the flag with a
small red star in the center of the triangle. The rest of the flag is composed
of two horizontal bands, with the top band light blue in colour. The bottom
band is green, which represents both the Afar people and the earth. The blue
stripe symbolises the Issa People as well as the sky and sea. The small red
star stands for the unity within the country as well as the blood lost during
the fight for independence against France. Additionally, the large white
triangle containing the star symbolises peace and equality. This design was
adopted as the national flag after Djibouti gained independence from France on
the 27th of June 1977.
Djibouti is
located on the north-eastern coast of the Horn of Africa. The coastline of
Djibouti is lined by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Other nations
surrounding Djibouti include Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. The capital city
Djibouti City is located on the southern coastline of the Gulf of Tadjoura. The
Gulf of Tadjoura is home to a coral reef providing habitat for a wide range of
aquatic animals. The capital city is home to approximately 70% of the country's
total population of 1.14 million people. The population of Djibouti is the
smallest out of all the nations on the African mainland. The majority of the
population speaks Somali. However, it is not recognised as an official language
of Djibouti, which are instead French and Arabic. The nation is close to
23,200km2 in area and less than 1% is covered in trees making it one
of the least forested countries in the world.
