The flag of
Liechtenstein features a horizontal bicolour with a crown in the upper
left-hand corner. The red which composes the bottom half of the flag represents
the fires lit inside most homes within Liechtenstein. The upper blue half
symbolises the blue skies found in Liechtenstein. Finally, the crown is a
symbol of the country’s prince and the unity amongst its people. This flag
became the national flag of Liechtenstein on the 24th of June 1937,
soon after the addition of the golden crown. The crown was added to the flag of
Liechtenstein, which was previously just the red and blue horizontal bicolour,
after the 1936 Olympic Games. This was due to the flags of Liechtenstein and
Haiti, being the exact same which was not recognised until the Olympic
Ceremony.
Liechtenstein
is a small principality, approximately 160km2 in size, located
between the nation of Austria and Switzerland. As a result, this makes
Liechtenstein one of only two countries along with Uzbekistan to be double
landlocked, meaning that the countries bordering the principality are also
landlocked themselves. The capital city Vaduz is located in the western portion
of the principality and is home to the Vaduz Castle, which is the official
residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein and his family. It is here that the National Day of Liechtenstein is celebrated, with the prince inviting the
approximately 40,000 residents of Liechtenstein to celebrate at the castle’s
annual festival, on the 15th of August every year. The official
language of Liechtenstein is German. However, an Alemannic dialect is most
commonly spoken and is similar to Swiss German. The principality does not have
an army and relies on its police force to provide safety and security, with
Liechtenstein being one of the safest countries in the world.
