Singapore National Flag
The flag of Singapore has multiple
features with each depicting a significant meaning. The red horizontal stripe
represents brotherhood and equality. The horizontal white stripe below stands
for purity and virtue. The crescent moon symbolizes a new nation that is going
to continue to grow, while the five stars represent democracy, progress,
justice, peace and equality. Which are all ideals Singapore finds extremely
important. This design was first hoisted in 1959, before being declared as
Singapore’s national flag in 1965. The flag was designed by Dr Toh Chin Chye
and his committee, as the country wanted to replace the Union Jack which had
previously been used for 140 years.
Singapore has a population of
approximately 6 million people, most of which live on the main island. However,
there are an additional 63 islands with the majority being uninhabited. The
most popular island other than the main island is that of Sentosa, which houses
attractions such as Universal Studios and Waterworld. The capital city of
Singapore is Singapore making it one of three surviving city-states in the
world, along with Monaco and Vatican City.
The name Singapore originates from
the word Singapura, which translates to ‘lion city’. It was named this by
Sumatran prince, Sang Nila Utama, who thought he saw a lion while hunting.
However, there have never been lions found outside of captivity in Singapore.
In Singapore, there is plenty of biodiversity, in Bukit Timah Reserve there are
more species of tree than in the entirety of the continent of North America.
There are four official languages in Singapore these are English, Chinese,
Tamil and Malay, which is also the national language.
