The flag of the Dominican Republic was adopted as the national flag on the 6th of November 1844. The flag features a white cross in the center of the flag creating 4 rectangles. These rectangles are blue and red in colour, with the top left and bottom right rectangles coloured blue and the top right and bottom left red in colour. In the center of the white cross is the Dominican Republic’s coat of arms. The coat of arms is composed of a shield which contains a bible, making it the only national flag in the world with a bible on it. Above the bible is a golden cross as well as multiple crosses and four flags. To the left of the shield is a laurel branch and to the right a palm branch. Below the shield is the country's name “República Dominicana” and above are the words “Dios, Patria, Libertad” which translates to ‘God, Fatherland, Liberty’. The blue featured in the flag is said to represent both liberty and the sky in which God protects the nation. The white cross symbolises the religious legacy of the nation as well as the peace and union of the country. The blood of those who fought for the nation’s independence is represented by the red within the flag.
