Slovakia National Flag
Slovakia’s flag consists of three horizontal bands, white,
blue and red, which are the Pan-Slavic colours which are also used by other
Slavic countries on their national flags. Additionally, the flag of Slovakia
features a coat of arms to differentiate the Slovakian national flag from that
of Russia’s. This coat of arms consists of three blue mountains, with a white
double cross located on top. This is all surrounded by a white shield with a
red background. The colours of the coat of arms are used as they resemble the
Pan-Slavic colours. The three mountains symbolise Fatra, Matra and Tatra. These
are three mountain ranges that are either in, near or surround Slovakia. The
double cross represents Christianity which is incredibly important in Slovakia.
This design was adopted as the national flag on the 3rd of September
1992 and was designed by Ladislav Cisarik.
The nation of Slovakia is a land-locked nation located in
Central Europe, which gained its independence from Czechoslovakia in 1993,
which is often referred to as the ‘velvet divorce’. Slovakia features a
population of around 5.4 million people with a large majority speaking Slovak.
Slovakia is approximately 49,035km2 in area. The capital city
Bratislava is located on the western side of the country, right next to the
border between Slovakia and Austria and only 60km away from Vienna. This makes
the two countries' capitals the closest capitals of Europe. Slovakia is home to
over 6000 caves, with the Krasnohorska Cave featuring a 34m tall sinter column
making it the largest in the world. Slovakia has the most castles per capita
than any other country on Earth, with roughly 100 castles and 425 châteaux.
