The Scottish flag is over 500 years
old making it the oldest national flag still in use today. The flag resembles
the crucifixion of St. Andrews. The flag is based on this event as when King
Angus II led his army into battle against the Saxons and was facing defeat, he
saw the saltire in the distance and pledged if his army won the battle, he
would make St Andrew and the saltire the flag of Scotland. Other tales suggest
that King Angus had a dream which included St Andrew promising that his army
would win the battle. However, King Angus II and his army went on to win the
battle, resulting in St Andrews cross representing Scotland for hundreds of
years.
The national food of Scotland is
Haggis, which is sheep liver, heart and lungs minced and combined with mutton
or beef suet as well as oatmeal. This is seasoned with a variety of spices
including onion and cayenne pepper. It is then packed into the stomach of the
sheep and boiled.
Scotland is known for its mythical
creatures such as the Loch Ness Monster or the Kelpies. The national animal of
Scotland is the unicorn. These mythical creatures could be hiding on any one of
Scotland’s islands as Scotland has over 790 islands, in which only 130 are
inhabited.
The capital city of Scotland is
Edinburgh and Scotland has a population of approximately 5.2 million people.
