Belize National Flag

The national flag of Belize which was officially adopted after it gained independence from Britain on the 21st of September 1981. This flag features a blue background with two horizontal red bands, one on the top and one running along the bottom of the flag. The dark blue represents the People’s United Party, which pioneered the nation’s independence. The red is representative of the United Democratic Party, which is the opposition party. In the center of Belize’s flag is the Coat of Arms encircled by a white circle. Around the perimeter of this white disk are 50 olive leaves which are symbolistic of the year 1950 when British Honduras, now known as Belize, began its fight for independence from the British Empire. Surrounding the central shield are two men, a mahogany tree and the nation’s motto ‘Sub Umbra Floreo’, which translates to ‘I Flourish in the Shade’. The mahogany tree, which is the country’s national tree, and the two men carrying an axe and an oar symbolise the nation’s logging industry, which is the country's primary source of an economy. The shield, which is split into 3 parts, is also representative of Belize’s logging industry, with a hammer and oar in the left third, a saw and axe in the right third and in the bottom third a ship.

Belize is a country approximately 22,966km2 in area, located in north-eastern Central America.
