Panama International Flag
Panama’s
national flag primarily represents the two major political parties of the
country during the flag’s creation. The blue star and rectangle portray the
conservative party. The opposite red rectangle and star symbolises the Liberal
Party. The two white rectangles represent the peace within the nation and
between the two political parties. This flag was designed by the first lady of
Panama from 1904 to 1908, Maria De La Ossa De Amador, in 1903. However, it was
not adopted as the national flag of Panama until the 25th of March
1925.
The nation
of Panama is located in Central America, which connects the countries of Costa
Rica and Colombia. Along the northern coast is the Caribbean Sea and the
southern coast is lined by the Pacific Ocean. The capital city is Panama City
which is located at the Pacific Ocean entrance to the Panama Canal. This canal
connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, cutting through the nation of Panama.
This shortens vessels’ journeys by thousands of kilometres, as without the
canal ships would be required to go around the entirety of the continent of
South America. The Panama Canal has been controlled by the country of Panama
since the 31st of December 1999 and as a result one third of the
country’s economy is generated by the Panama Canal. Panama is approximately
75,420km2 in area and around 4.52 million people live in the
country. Majority of Panama’s population speaks Spanish, and it is recognised as
the official language of Panama. The nation was originally a Spanish colony but
gained its independence from Spain in 1821. However, this is not the only time
Panama gained independence, later gaining independence from Colombia in 1903.
This means Panama celebrates two independence days every year. The Panama
Railroad is the world’s oldest continually operating railroad, and it runs from
Colón to Panama City.
