The flag of Kiribati was adopted in 1979 which was the same year
the country gained independence from the United Kingdom. In the same year the
name was changed from the Gilbert Islands to Kiribati. Although, Kiribati is
just the local spelling and pronunciation of Gilberts. The blue and white waves
making up the bottom half of the flag represent the Pacific Ocean where the
country is located. The three groups of islands; Gilbert, Phoenix and Line are
represented by the three white stripes. The 17 rays of the sun portray the 16
Kiribati islands as well as Banaba, which is an ocean island. The bird located
above the sun is a frigate bird, which represents the strength and command of
the ocean and additionally power and freedom.
Kiribati is a country located in the Pacific Ocean approximately
811km2 in size. Within Kiribati’s islands and atolls there is a
population of approximately 131,232 people, with around half living in the
capital South Tarawa. The official language is Gilbertese but English is also
widely spoken and understood around Kiribati. The highest point of Kiribati is
81m above sea level with the average height being 2m above sea level.
