Brunei’s flag is one of very few with a yellow background. This
yellow background represents the Sultan, while the black and white stripes
stand for the two chief ministers. The national coat of arms has various
features each with their own unique meaning. The wings also known as the Sayap
signify the protection of peace, tranquility, justice and prosperity. The hands
located either side of the symbol symbolise the government’s promise to advance
peace, prosperity and welfare. While the crescent, also known as Bulan, is the
symbol of Islam. Islam is the national religion of Brunei Darussalam. The words
written on the Bulan read the country's national slogan, “Always in service
with God’s guidance”. Beneath that is inscribed “Brunei Darussalam”, meaning
“Brunei, the abode of peace”.
