Suriname was part of the Dutch kingdom until 1975. There were many coups and constitutional changes until they finally reached independence in November 1975.
The Flag was chosen by a parliamentary commission. Green and red were the colours of the political parties. The two horizontal white lines represent justice and freedom. The yellow star is an emblem of unity and hope.
Capital city: Paramaribo.
Suriname is the smallest country in South America and is also the poorest.
The Surinamese people celebrate their Independence Day on 25th November.
