Croatia’s
national flag features 3 horizontal bands which are in the traditional
Pan-Slavic and Croatian colours of red, white and blue. Additionally, these
colours have other significant meanings. The red symbolises the blood of
martyrs and the blue represents the significance of God to Croatia. The white
demonstrates the importance of peace to Croatia. Located in the center of the
flag is Croatia’s national coat of arms, which features a shield with a
checkerboard of 12 white squares and 13 red squares. Above, the primary shield
are 5 smaller shields which symbolise Croatia, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and
Slavonia ordered from left to right. This flag was adopted as the national flag
of Croatia on the 21st of December 1990.
